Pune-based Matel Motion & Energy Solutions has secured ₹130 crore in Series B funding to scale its electric powertrain manufacturing. The capital will support R&D, entry into the commercial EV sector, and international expansion. Investors will monitor how quickly the company increases production capacity and manages its product development timeline.

Matel Motion & Energy Solutions, a Pune-based specialist in electric motors and powertrains, has raised ₹130 crore in its Series B funding round. The investment was led by UC Impower, with additional funding from Catamaran and existing backer Transition VC. This follow-up to the company's Series A round in May 2024 highlights continued interest from growth-stage investors in the domestic electric vehicle (EV) supply chain.

Strategic Expansion and Product Focus

The company plans to use the new funds to increase its manufacturing capacity and deepen its research and development activities. Since its establishment in 2017, Matel has focused on energy-efficient motor technology, including magnet-free motors and IE5-rated industrial motors. A significant part of the new strategy involves entering the electric commercial vehicle segment, a move that requires specialized powertrains capable of handling heavier loads and more rigorous duty cycles compared to typical passenger two-wheelers. The company is also in the process of developing an IE6-rated motor.

Leadership and Operational Context

Matel’s leadership team brings significant experience from the traditional automotive sector. CEO Sunil Patel previously managed EV development at Bajaj Auto, while co-founder Netaji Patro held R&D leadership roles at Maruti Suzuki and Bajaj Auto. This background in large-scale automotive manufacturing is often a monitorable factor for investors, as the company seeks to translate its technical capabilities into a broader market footprint. The transition from industrial and pumping applications to the competitive commercial EV market will be the primary test for the company’s scalability.

Market and Execution Risks

For investors following the EV components space, the execution of this expansion is crucial. Expanding into the electric commercial vehicle segment requires meeting specific durability and performance standards that differ from existing industrial motor products. The success of this move will depend on the company's ability to balance its increased capital spending with demand from OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers).
