Maruti Suzuki Launches Updated Brezza With Turbo-Petrol Engine

Maruti Suzuki has introduced an updated Brezza starting at ₹7.4 lakh, featuring a new 998cc turbo-petrol engine and standard six airbags. The model includes significant safety and comfort upgrades, such as a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating and ventilated seats, aimed at maintaining its competitive edge in the crowded compact SUV segment.

Maruti Suzuki has expanded its Brezza SUV range with a refreshed model, introducing a 998cc Boosterjet turbo-petrol engine. The vehicle, launched on July 24, 2026, is priced between ₹7.4 lakh and ₹13.7 lakh (ex-showroom). This update follows the company’s ongoing strategy to balance performance with tax efficiency in a highly competitive automotive market.

Strategic Engine Shift and Tax Impact

The introduction of the 998cc turbo-petrol engine is a major development for the company's product lineup. By moving to this smaller engine capacity, the vehicle qualifies for a GST rate of 18%, which is significantly lower than the 40% tax slab applied to larger 1.5-liter engines. This tax advantage could potentially help the company maintain more competitive pricing while managing input costs. Alongside the new engine, the existing 1.5-liter petrol and CNG models have been upgraded with six-speed manual transmissions, providing customers with more variety across different usage needs.

Safety and Feature Upgrades

Maruti Suzuki has focused heavily on safety and interior technology to improve its standing against domestic and international rivals. The updated Brezza features a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating for both adult and child occupants, a credential that is becoming increasingly important for Indian car buyers. Furthermore, the company has made six airbags standard across all variants, moving away from its previous policy of limiting this feature to premium trims. Inside, the inclusion of a 10.1-inch infotainment system and ventilated seats marks a move toward higher-value products to attract urban consumers.

Investor and Sector Context

The compact SUV segment remains the most aggressively contested area in the Indian passenger vehicle market. Competitors like Hyundai, Tata Motors, and Mahindra continue to launch new models and features regularly, putting constant pressure on market share and margins. While the addition of an underbody-mounted CNG cylinder is a practical design choice to increase luggage space, the overall success of this facelift will depend on how effectively the company can balance the costs of these premium features with demand. Investors should track how the market responds to these new variants in the coming quarterly results and whether the move toward smaller, lower-tax engines helps the company improve its operating margins. The long-term impact on profitability will also depend on how efficiently the company manages the supply chain for these new technology features and whether the higher-priced variants see strong consumer adoption.
