M&M Shares Hit 52-Week Low As Tractor Sales Dip Overshadows Auto Growth

Mahindra & Mahindra reported a 15% rise in September vehicle sales, but the stock fell over 3% to a 52-week low. While SUVs and commercial vehicles performed well, a 23% decline in tractor sales due to festive season shifts weighed on investor sentiment.

Mahindra & Mahindra faced a sharp market reaction on October 1, 2026, as investors focused on the weak tractor segment despite a strong performance in the automotive business. Shares of the company fell over 3% during the trading session, touching a new 52-week low of ₹2,843.65. This price drop highlights the market's sensitivity to rural demand, which is often gauged through tractor sales.

In terms of automotive performance, the company reported a solid 15% year-on-year growth, selling 114,874 vehicles in September. The utility vehicle segment, a key driver for the brand, saw domestic sales climb 14% to 64,092 units. Similarly, the commercial vehicle business also grew by 14%, reaching 30,420 units. The company also reached a notable operational milestone, crossing 100,000 cumulative billings for its Electric Origin SUVs, signaling progress in its electrification strategy.

However, these positive automotive figures were overshadowed by a decline in the farm equipment sector. Domestic tractor sales dropped 23% to 50,208 units compared to the same month last year. Management and market analysts often attribute such fluctuations to the timing of the festive season. Because the major festive demand shifted to October this year, September sales faced a difficult comparison against last year's performance. Despite this explanation, the stock decline suggests that investors remain cautious about the health of the rural economy and the potential impact of this slowdown on the company’s overall revenue.

For investors, the contrast between the automotive growth and the tractor segment decline remains the most important factor to track. While the auto business shows resilience in urban and commercial markets, the farm equipment business is heavily influenced by monsoons, rural income, and the timing of festivals. As the company prepares for its upcoming financial reporting, the focus will shift to how these volume trends impact profit margins and bottom-line growth. The board is scheduled to meet on November 5, 2026, to approve the financial results for the second quarter of the current fiscal year.
