Mahindra & Mahindra saw an 18.5% rise in passenger vehicle registrations during the first eight days of Navratri, even as the overall industry faced a 3.3% decline. While rivals like Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors recorded lower sales, Mahindra's performance reflects strong demand for its current SUV and EV model lineup. Investors are tracking if this festive momentum can continue through the upcoming Diwali season.
Mahindra & Mahindra reported an 18.5% year-on-year increase in passenger vehicle registrations during the first eight days of the Navratri festival, standing out as one of the few manufacturers to grow despite a broader market slowdown. While total industry-wide registrations for passenger vehicles slipped by 3.3% to 150,736 units during the same period, Mahindra’s performance suggests that its recent model launches and demand for its SUV portfolio are helping it capture market share.
The competitive landscape remains challenging for other major players. Maruti Suzuki, the domestic market leader, saw its registrations fall by 2.4% to 65,921 units. Tata Motors experienced a sharper decline of 15.3% to 22,848 units, while Hyundai Motor India reported a 6.8% drop. In contrast, Mahindra successfully registered 19,230 vehicles, a significant improvement over the 16,231 units it recorded during the same period last year.
A key driver for Mahindra's festive performance was the electric vehicle (EV) segment. The company reported a 66.5% surge in EV registrations, totaling 2,369 units. Tata Motors, which continues to lead the segment in absolute volume, delivered 4,251 units, representing a 52.4% increase. Industry data indicates that EV sales now account for approximately 10.5% of total retail volume, suggesting that the transition toward cleaner mobility continues to support sales for major manufacturers.
Broader FADA retail data for the nine-day period ending October 19 highlights a mixed picture for the automotive sector. While total retail volumes across all categories rose by 1.95% to 10.32 lakh units, the passenger vehicle segment specifically faced pressure, contracting by 13.66%. In contrast, the two-wheeler sector demonstrated resilience with a 5.78% increase in retail volume, and the commercial vehicle segment saw an uptick of 14.21% to 34,120 units.
The next important monitorable for investors will be the sales performance during the upcoming Dhanteras and Diwali window. Manufacturers are banking on pent-up demand and higher consumer sentiment to recover volumes after a volatile start to the festival season. Whether the passenger vehicle segment can normalize its growth trajectory remains the primary focus for the sector in the coming weeks.
