Karnataka Industries Minister M.B. Patil has refuted claims of Honda Motor exiting the state, citing continued production and new infrastructure investments. While the company is expanding its logistics footprint, it has reportedly adjusted its electric vehicle manufacturing strategy in response to current market demand.
The Karnataka government has officially dismissed reports suggesting that Honda Motor is planning to relocate its operations out of the state. Industries Minister M.B. Patil described the claims, which were raised by Union Minister for Heavy Industries H.D. Kumaraswamy, as baseless. The state government emphasized that the manufacturer remains a major contributor to the regional industrial output, with no formal indication of an exit.
Existing Operations and New Investments
Honda maintains a significant industrial footprint in Karnataka, centered around its Narasapura manufacturing plant in the Kolar district. Operational since 2013, the facility employs over 7,800 workers and currently produces approximately 10,000 two-wheelers daily. This site serves as a key pillar for the company’s southern manufacturing operations.
Beyond current production levels, the company is also expanding its infrastructure. In September 2026, Honda Cars India announced a ₹450 crore investment to significantly expand its spare parts warehouse in Doddaballapura. This project aims to increase the facility’s footprint to 140,000 square meters, reinforcing the company's long-term logistics strategy in the region.
Strategic Pivot in EV Manufacturing
While the government has clarified that Honda is not exiting the state, the company has reportedly adjusted its capital expenditure plans for electric vehicles. Reports from late October 2026 indicate that Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) has decided to put on hold or cancel plans for a dedicated ₹600 crore electric two-wheeler factory in Narasapura.
This shift is largely attributed to softer-than-expected demand for electric two-wheelers in the current market environment. Rather than building a new, dedicated greenfield site, the company is now expected to utilize its existing manufacturing infrastructure to integrate electric vehicle production. This strategy allows the company to maintain a presence while managing the risks associated with volatile EV demand and high initial capital spending.
Investor Monitorables
Investors may note that the automotive sector currently faces pressure from a global slowdown and shifting consumer preferences, particularly in the EV segment. While Honda’s continued investment in logistics indicates a commitment to the Indian market, the company's ability to navigate these market challenges and effectively transition existing capacity toward electric mobility will be a key factor to watch. Future updates on production volume, capacity utilization at the Narasapura plant, and the company's updated roadmap for electric vehicle rollout will remain important indicators for the business.
