JSW MG Motor Identifies Opportunity in Sub-4 Meter EVs Under ₹12 Lakh

JSW MG Motor India sees a major growth gap in the sub-4 meter EV segment priced below ₹12 lakh. While consumer interest is growing, the lack of affordable electric models compared to traditional petrol and diesel cars is limiting market penetration. The company highlights that expanding product variety is essential to catch up to the adoption rates seen in the SUV segment.

Anurag Mehrotra, the Managing Director of JSW MG Motor India, has pointed out a key hurdle in the growth of India’s electric vehicle market. While interest in electric cars has risen significantly over the past year, the market lacks enough affordable options in the popular sub-4 meter category. This specific segment, which includes small cars and compact SUVs, is a high-volume area for traditional petrol and diesel vehicles but remains largely underserved by electric models priced under ₹12 lakh.

The Gap Between Traditional Cars and EVs

The current automotive market in India shows a clear mismatch in product availability. There are roughly 35 different petrol or diesel models available in the sub-4 meter category, offering customers a wide range of choices. In contrast, the electric vehicle market currently offers fewer than 10 options in this same space. Mehrotra suggests that for electric vehicles to move past the current 7-8% market penetration, manufacturers must introduce more models that match the pricing and size preferences of typical Indian buyers.

Lessons from the SUV Segment

To illustrate how supply can drive demand, Mehrotra pointed to the rapid rise of the SUV segment in India. Between 2014 and 2026, SUV penetration in the passenger vehicle market grew from less than 5% to 65%. This shift was largely triggered by car manufacturers launching a diverse range of SUVs at different price points. By following a similar strategy—increasing the variety and availability of electric vehicles in the sub-4 meter segment—automakers could potentially unlock much higher adoption rates among consumers.

Market Competition and Future Outlook

While companies like Tata Motors have established a footprint in this segment with models such as the Punch EV and Tiago EV, many other major players are yet to launch electric alternatives in this price bracket. Manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motor have a dominant presence with small petrol and diesel cars, but their electric portfolios are currently more limited. Other companies, including Kia India, Honda Cars, and the Skoda-Volkswagen group, also face the challenge of entering this price-sensitive area.

The future of electric vehicle growth in India will likely depend on how quickly automakers can scale up production of affordable models and improve battery cost efficiencies. Investors will be watching for new product announcements, production timelines, and whether major players can successfully transition their popular sub-4 meter platforms to electric powertrains without compromising on margins or demand.
