JSW Greentech Wins First Major 100 Electric Truck Order

JSW Greentech has secured its first commercial order for 100 AMPSTAR electric tractor trucks from JSW Cement. The 55-tonne vehicles will be used for logistics between Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, supported by a battery-swapping network. This deployment serves as a key test for the group's internal EV logistics capabilities.

JSW Greentech has marked its entry into the commercial electric vehicle market by securing an order for 100 AMPSTAR electric tractor trucks from JSW Cement. This deal involves the deployment of 55-tonne 4x2 prime movers, designed specifically for heavy-duty industrial haulage. The trucks will operate on a 330-km logistics route between Nandyal in Andhra Pradesh and Vijaynagar in Karnataka, carrying clinker and slag for the cement manufacturer.

Operational Model and Infrastructure

The project relies on a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model provided by JSW Eco-Mobility, allowing for faster turnaround times for heavy-duty transport. To support this, four battery-swapping stations have been established along the transit corridor. This infrastructure is intended to address one of the primary challenges in heavy electric vehicle logistics—long charging wait times—by enabling operators to replace depleted batteries quickly. The fleet is expected to manage approximately 125,000 tonnes of cargo every month, helping the company replace traditional diesel trucks on this specific route.

Manufacturing Capacity and Investment

Supporting this expansion is a significant capital commitment of ₹2,500 crore, which has been invested in a manufacturing facility located in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra. The plant has an annual production capacity of 15,000 units. The facility features an automated cabin production line and an integrated assembly ecosystem for batteries. The company has also cleared regulatory hurdles, with its AMPSTAR 4x2 and 6x4 models receiving certification under the Central Motor Vehicle Rules from the Automotive Research Association of India, which permits legal road operations nationwide.

Investor Monitorables

For investors, this development represents a strategic push toward vertical integration within the JSW Group. By utilizing its own manufacturing arm for logistics, the group is effectively testing its product in a controlled environment before seeking broader market adoption. However, investors may track the capital expenditure of ₹2,500 crore, as high spending requires sustained high-volume demand to generate healthy returns. The key monitorable moving forward will be the performance of the battery-swapping infrastructure and whether the company can successfully scale its order book beyond internal group requirements. Any delays in operational efficiency or maintenance of the battery stations could impact the project's logistics targets. Market observers will also watch to see if the company secures external orders from third-party logistics firms, which would be a critical step toward commercial validation beyond the JSW ecosystem.
