JK Tyre & Industries is launching a ₹6,110 crore investment plan to focus on premium tyres, electric vehicle applications, and smart sensor technology. This strategy aims to improve profit margins, which recently declined due to rising raw material costs. Investors will monitor how this product shift impacts the company's financial health as it balances heavy investment with competitive market pressure.
JK Tyre & Industries has announced a major investment plan worth ₹6,110 crore. This money will be used to boost the company’s focus on high-value premium passenger tyres, electric vehicle (EV) solutions, and smart sensor technology. The decision comes at a time when the company is working to fix a decline in operating profits, which were hit by rising raw material costs in the recent quarter.
The core of this strategy is shifting toward higher-value products. The company aims to significantly increase the share of its premium passenger tyres—specifically those for 16-inch rims and larger—to more than half of its total sales within two years. Currently, these tyres make up about 27% to 30% of sales. The goal is to sell products with higher price tags, which typically offer better profit margins compared to smaller, standard tyres.
The financial reality is that the tyre industry is currently feeling pressure from high raw material costs. In the July-September quarter, while revenue grew by 20.7% to ₹4,840.73 crore, the company’s operating profit fell by 35.9% to ₹343.14 crore. Since raw materials make up roughly two-thirds of the manufacturing cost, the management is using this investment to pivot toward items that offer better protection against these costs. To ensure money is spent efficiently, the company is also choosing to outsource production for the two- and three-wheeler segments rather than building its own factories for these lower-margin products.
Technology is another pillar of this expansion. The company is working on smart tyres with embedded sensors that can track real-time data like air pressure and temperature. On the EV front, the company has developed specific product lines like the JETWAY JUXe for commercial vehicles and the Ranger HPe for passenger electric cars.
For investors, the key monitorable will be how effectively the company executes these projects while managing debt. The tyre sector in India is highly competitive and sensitive to the price of natural rubber and crude oil derivatives. While the shift to premium and EV tyres is a strategic move to defend margins, the company’s long-term success will depend on whether this product mix can consistently offset raw material price volatility. Investors may track upcoming quarterly results to see if these investments start translating into stable profit margins and whether the company can successfully expand its reach in the electric vehicle market.
