Taxi Segment Surge
Passenger vehicle registrations specifically for taxi use in India have surged dramatically over the past four years, nearly tripling and setting the stage for intensified competition among major car manufacturers. Data from the government's Vahan portal indicates that approximately 312,665 vehicles were registered for the taxi segment in calendar year 2025. This represents a 9% growth from the preceding year, a significant uptick from the 114,535 registrations recorded in 2022.
Carmakers' Strategy Shift
Responding to this expanding market, automotive companies are increasingly focusing on developing and promoting vehicles tailored for the taxi segment. Hyundai Motor India and VinFast India have recently announced plans to actively compete, introducing dedicated offerings. Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. continues to dominate this space, holding a commanding market share of around 72% with its 'Tour' range, which includes models like the Dzire, Ertiga, Wagon R, and Eeco. Hyundai launched its 'Prime Taxi' range in December, featuring modified existing models for cab services. Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle Ltd., with its 'XPres' electric vehicle range, are also participants, though Tata's registrations were notably lower. Maruti Suzuki recorded 225,737 registrations, followed by Hyundai with 32,579 and Mahindra with 22,328 in 2025.
VinFast's Electric Ambitions
Vietnamese automaker VinFast India is positioning itself aggressively, especially within the electric vehicle space. An affiliate company, Green and Smart Mobility JSC (GSM), plans to enter India, operating electric taxi fleets using VinFast vehicles. VinFast India intends to introduce a seven-seater MPV specifically designed for fleet operations, aiming to capitalize on the commercial mobility segment's growth potential. This strategic focus on fleet operations has been successful for VinFast in other markets and is now a key part of its India entry plan.
Aggregators Fuel Demand
The growth in the taxi segment is intrinsically linked to the rapid expansion of cab aggregator apps such as Uber, Rapido, and Ola. According to Uber's 2025 data, total trips grew by 26.5%, spanning over 11.6 billion kilometers. Rapido reported its revenue more than doubling in the cab segment from ₹443 crore in FY2023 to ₹909 crore in FY2025. Experts note that the increasing network of taxis, supported by both major and smaller regional apps, is creating sustained demand for vehicles suitable for commercial use.
