The Indian government is reportedly considering a deferral of the mandatory Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) implementation for two-wheelers with engines up to 125cc. The original deadline for this safety feature was set for January 1, 2026. This potential delay is a result of discussions between the road transport ministry and the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).
Two-wheeler manufacturers, during a recent meeting with Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, expressed doubts regarding the effectiveness of ABS technology in lower-displacement (up to 125cc) two-wheelers. They also highlighted concerns that the addition of ABS could increase the price of entry-level motorcycles and scooters by over ₹5,000, potentially impacting sales of these affordable models which have seen a boost from GST reductions.
In response, Minister Gadkari suggested that the industry consult the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), the government's authorized testing and validation agency, to scientifically establish the effectiveness of ABS in this category. However, an ARAI official stated that they have not yet received any official intimation or directive from SIAM or the ministry for such testing.
The ministry had previously issued draft rules on June 27 mandating ABS for all two-wheelers manufactured on or after January 1, 2026. Two-wheelers above 150cc already comply with this requirement.
An executive from a two-wheeler manufacturing company indicated that the testing process by ARAI could take one to two months, followed by at least a year for industry preparation and rollout, making implementation by 2026 unlikely. There is also a possibility that the regulation may not be implemented at all if some government bodies believe it could hinder demand for entry-level vehicles.
Impact
This news impacts the Indian auto sector, specifically two-wheeler manufacturers and their component suppliers. The potential deferral delays compliance costs for manufacturers and may support sales of lower-cost entry-level models by keeping prices stable. However, it also means a slower rollout of a key safety feature, potentially impacting road safety statistics in the long run. The automotive component industry, particularly ABS manufacturers, will see delayed demand.
