India's electric vehicle registrations surged over 66% in July to 3.3 lakh units, led by electric two-wheelers crossing the 2-lakh milestone for the first time. The rise reflects strong consumer adoption and expanded model availability, though performance varied across key manufacturers like TVS, Bajaj, and Ola.
The Indian electric vehicle market reached a significant milestone in July 2026, with total registrations across all categories climbing to approximately 3.3 lakh units. This represents a robust increase of over 66% compared to the same month last year and maintains an upward trajectory from the 3.1 lakh units recorded in June. Official Vahan portal data highlights that the rapid transition toward electric mobility is increasingly driven by two-wheeler adoption.
Two-Wheeler Segment Sets New Record
The electric two-wheeler market acted as the primary growth driver, surpassing 2 lakh monthly registrations for the first time. Total units reached 2,04,201 in July, up from 1.95 lakh in June and significantly higher than the 1.1 lakh units reported in July 2025. This segment now accounts for 11.2% of the total two-wheeler registrations in India, signaling a consistent shift in consumer preference. The average monthly sales for this category have climbed to roughly 1.7 lakh units so far in 2026, supported by a broader range of models and an expanding dealer footprint across the country.
Competitive Landscape Among Manufacturers
Market leadership in the electric two-wheeler space remained competitive in July. TVS Motor maintained the top position with 55,465 registrations, reflecting growth from 47,418 units in June. Bajaj Auto followed with 45,562 Chetak units, compared to 43,505 in the previous month. Ather Energy recorded 30,317 registrations, a slight dip from 31,440 in June. Hero MotoCorp’s Vida brand saw a volume increase to 22,883 units, while Ola Electric saw a decline in monthly registrations to 14,102 units from 16,249 in June.
Passenger Vehicle Market Trends
The electric passenger vehicle segment saw a minor moderation in growth, with registrations easing to 32,660 units in July compared to 33,441 in June. Despite this month-on-month dip, the sector maintains a higher volume compared to the previous year. Tata Motors continues to lead the electric passenger vehicle segment, with its registrations rising to 13,568 units in July from 12,766 in the previous month.
For investors, the key monitorable remains how manufacturers balance their market share with price competition and the long-term impact of changes in government incentives for electric vehicles. While the overall adoption rate is trending upward, the segment remains sensitive to shifts in subsidy policies, raw material costs for batteries, and the overall pace of charging infrastructure development. Future updates will focus on whether this growth momentum in two-wheeler registrations sustains as companies continue to scale production and introduce new variants.
