India EV Sales Hit Record 354,000 Units in October 2026

India's electric vehicle market reached a record 354,000 registrations in October, driven by a surge in two-wheeler sales. While the passenger vehicle segment grew strongly on an annual basis, it saw a slight monthly dip, signaling shifts in consumer demand post-festive season. Investors are now watching to see if this momentum holds as festive discounts begin to fade.

India’s electric vehicle (EV) sector recorded its highest-ever monthly sales in October 2026, with total registrations reaching 354,000 units. This performance marks the fifth consecutive month that registrations have surpassed the 300,000 threshold, according to data from the Vahan dashboard. While the festive season provided a strong boost to sales, the consistent data suggests that EV adoption is becoming a more permanent fixture in the Indian automotive landscape.

The electric two-wheeler (E2W) segment continues to act as the primary growth driver, contributing a record 224,000 registrations for the month. This segment’s rapid expansion is being led by established manufacturers; for instance, TVS Motor reported its highest-ever monthly E2W deliveries of 60,429 units in October. This strong performance highlights a significant shift in consumer preference toward electric options for daily commuting, supported by increasing model availability and easier financing options.

In contrast, the electric passenger vehicle (PV) segment showed mixed results. While registrations grew by 75% compared to the same month last year, the segment experienced a 4% decline in volume compared to September. Tata Motors, which holds a leading market share of approximately 40.7% in the electric PV space, remains central to this segment’s performance. The monthly cooling in PV sales is a common trend after the peak festive period, as buyers often wait for year-end inventory clearance deals.

For investors, the sector presents both opportunities and challenges. While the volume growth is undeniable, the profitability of many EV ventures remains under pressure due to heavy capital spending on expansion and battery technology development. Most manufacturers still face high risks related to the import of battery cells, which makes their cost structure vulnerable to currency fluctuations and global supply chain disruptions. Furthermore, the passenger vehicle market remains skewed toward premium and mid-priced models, with relatively low penetration in the crucial sub-₹10 lakh price segment, which is essential for mass-market adoption.

As the festive season concludes, the key monitorable for investors will be demand sustainability. Market participants will watch if manufacturers can maintain these sales volumes without aggressive discounting. Additionally, the industry’s ability to manage profit margins while scaling up production capacity remains a critical factor. Investors may keep an eye on upcoming quarterly results to see how volume growth is translating into actual cash flow and whether the heavy spending on electric mobility is yielding returns for the major players in the space.
