India’s automotive sector, a key pillar of the economy, is facing a significant structural hurdle. Roughly 61% of auto-component manufacturers are currently struggling to secure skilled manpower, particularly for high-voltage battery systems, power electronics, and AI-driven manufacturing. This workforce crunch is no longer just an operational inconvenience; it is directly impacting the production capacity of some of the country’s largest automakers.
The supply chain disruption has been evident in recent production numbers. In June 2026, for example, Mahindra & Mahindra reported production slowdowns of up to 15% at certain facilities, primarily attributed to contract worker shortages at key Tier-2 and Tier-3 suppliers. Meanwhile, Bajaj Auto is pushing to expand its annual manufacturing capacity from roughly 7 million to over 9 million units, a plan that faces pressure from these ongoing supplier-level constraints. When component makers cannot maintain output, the assembly lines of major Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) inevitably stutter.
The root of the problem lies in the rapid shift toward electric vehicles (EVs). Traditional automotive manufacturing relies on mechanical engineering skill sets, but the EV ecosystem demands deep expertise in electronics and mechatronics. The training pipeline is currently failing to keep up with the pace of technology adoption. Smaller manufacturers, who operate on tighter budgets, find it particularly difficult to invest in the automation or specialized training required to upskill their workforce, leading to a persistent stability issue across the supply chain.
From a financial perspective, the sector shows a dual narrative. The auto-component industry recorded a turnover of ₹7.60 lakh crore in FY26, representing a 12.7% growth. However, this growth has been accompanied by a trade deficit of $1.37 billion, largely due to a reliance on imported components for the EV and electronics segments. This import dependency is a direct result of the local industry's inability to manufacture advanced components at scale—a gap that is directly tied to the shortage of job-ready technical talent.
While long-term projections remain optimistic—with the ICCT and IIM Bangalore suggesting that the EV transition could support 7.2 million direct jobs by 2040—this growth is heavily contingent on achieving 50% battery localization. Without a skilled workforce to operate advanced domestic manufacturing, the sector risks trading its historical reliance on mechanical parts for a new reliance on imported EV components.
For investors, the immediate monitorables include the operational stability of key OEM suppliers and the success of localized component manufacturing efforts. While automation is being deployed as a partial solution to reduce manual reliance, the cost of these upgrades, combined with the difficulty of poaching specialized engineers, means that profit margins in the component space may face pressure.
