GAC Toyota Recalls 39,552 bZ7 EVs Over Safety Software Glitches

GAC Toyota is recalling 39,552 bZ7 electric sedans in China to fix software issues affecting gear shifts and visibility. This comes as Toyota faces a 17.1% sales decline in the Chinese market, highlighting the company's struggle to maintain momentum in the world's largest electric vehicle hub.

GAC Toyota, the Chinese joint venture of Toyota Motor Corporation, has announced a recall of 39,552 bZ7 electric sedans. The recall, which officially begins on August 1, 2026, follows directives from Chinese regulatory authorities aimed at correcting two distinct software-related safety concerns.

The first and most significant issue involves 15,266 bZ7 units fitted with a faulty Bluetooth module. This component may cause the vehicle to experience unintended gear shifts while in motion, which poses a serious risk to vehicle control. The second defect, affecting 24,286 vehicles, relates to the thermal management software. This flaw can prevent the defrosting and defogging systems from functioning correctly, potentially reducing driver visibility under certain weather conditions. Owners of the affected vehicles are expected to have the software patched through dealer service centers.

This recall adds to the current pressure on Toyota’s operations in China. The company has been navigating a difficult period, recently reporting a 17.1% drop in sales within the Chinese market for the first half of 2026. This local downturn contributed to a broader global trend, where Toyota recorded its first decline in production and sales in two years. Between January and June 2026, global sales fell by 2.9% to just over 5 million units, while total global production decreased by 1.2% to under 4.9 million units.

For investors, the situation highlights the dual challenges Toyota faces: recovering its competitive standing in the fast-moving Chinese electric vehicle segment while ensuring the reliability of its expanding EV software architecture. While Toyota has seen growth in other regions like North America and Japan, the consistent weakness in China—a critical market for future volume—remains a concern. The company’s ability to manage these technical recalls efficiently will be essential to preventing further brand erosion in a market already dominated by local electric vehicle manufacturers. Investors will likely monitor Toyota's future monthly sales reports from China to see if the recent production adjustments and software updates help stabilize its market share.
