Exide Industries Q1 Profit Rises 27% Amid Gigafactory Progress

Exide Industries reported a 27.1% year-on-year increase in net profit for the June 2026 quarter, reaching ₹407 crore. Revenue grew 17.6% to ₹5,305 crore, supported by strong demand in the automotive and solar sectors. The market reaction has been positive as the company nears the commercial production phase of its new lithium-ion gigafactory in Bengaluru.

Exide Industries posted a strong performance for the quarter ending June 2026, signaling growth across its key business areas. The company reported a net profit of ₹407 crore, a 27.1% increase compared to the same period last year. Revenue from operations also saw a healthy rise of 17.6%, reaching ₹5,305 crore.

This growth was largely supported by increased demand in the automotive sector, including sales to vehicle manufacturers (OEMs) and the replacement market. Additionally, the company’s solar and inverter battery segments contributed to the improved financial figures.

Strategic Focus on Lithium-Ion Expansion

A major focus for the company remains the development of its lithium-ion gigafactory in Bengaluru. This facility is part of its subsidiary, Exide Energy Solutions Limited (EESL). The project has reached an important milestone, with customer sample deliveries currently underway. This indicates that the company is moving closer to full-scale operations. The management is targeting the start of commercial production at this facility by the third quarter of the 2027 fiscal year.

To fund these ambitious plans, the company has approved a capital investment of ₹1,400 crore for the fiscal year 2027. Cumulative equity investment in the gigafactory subsidiary has reached ₹4,902 crore as of July 2026. Despite this heavy spending on expansion, the company maintains a low debt-to-equity ratio, relying primarily on its internal cash flow to fund these projects.

Market and Operational Risks

While the financial results show a positive trend, the company faces external pressures that investors should monitor. Fluctuating costs of raw materials, such as lead and acid, as well as currency changes, can pressure profit margins. If input costs rise sharply, maintaining the current profitability level may become more challenging.

Additionally, the success of the new lithium-ion venture depends on smooth project execution. Any unexpected delays in setting up the manufacturing lines or challenges in scaling up production to meet customer requirements could impact the company’s growth plans. The broader demand in both the traditional lead-acid battery market and the emerging lithium-ion sector remains a critical factor for future performance.

Investors will likely watch for updates on the gigafactory’s progress, specifically the commissioning timeline and the ramp-up of commercial production in the coming quarters.
