CEAT Expands Chennai Plant to Target Global Premium Markets

CEAT has upgraded its Chennai facility to produce premium 22-inch SUV and commercial radial tyres for global markets. This move is part of a larger ₹1,300 crore expansion plan aimed at improving profit margins, though the company currently faces pressure from high raw material costs and increased capital spending.

CEAT Limited is intensifying its focus on the premium tyre segment by scaling up production at its Chennai manufacturing site. The facility has been equipped with new production lines to manufacture high-end products, including 22-inch SUV tyres and advanced Truck and Bus Radial (TBR) tyres. By diversifying into these higher-value categories, the company intends to cater to specific performance demands in domestic, European, and North American markets.

This production ramp-up is a core component of the company's broader capital spending program, which includes an investment of over ₹1,300 crore that was approved by the board in January 2026. The strategic goal is to shift the company’s product mix toward higher-margin offerings, which could help protect its profitability against the highly competitive mass-market tyre segment.

While the company reported 22% year-on-year revenue growth in the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, its financial performance has faced significant headwinds. Rising raw material costs, driven largely by the ongoing crisis in West Asia, have compressed operating margins and impacted net profits. For investors, the ability to pass on these costs to customers while maintaining market share in the premium segment remains a critical factor.

The large capital expenditure required for this expansion also brings execution risks. As the company continues to invest heavily in its Chennai and Nagpur facilities, managing debt levels and ensuring the new capacity is effectively utilized will be important. Investors may monitor how quickly these premium products gain traction in export markets and whether the company can improve its margins in the coming quarters.

The immediate focus for the company will be on the successful commercialization of these new tyre sizes and the stabilization of operating margins. Future updates regarding the commissioning of remaining capacity and trends in raw material pricing will likely influence the company's financial health.
