CEAT Expands Chennai Plant Capacity for Premium Tyre Market

CEAT Limited has upgraded its Sriperumbudur facility to produce ultra-premium 22-inch SUV tyres and advanced commercial radials. This expansion aims to capture high-value market share, though investors may track how this large capital investment and rising raw material costs impact the company's profit margins in the coming quarters.

CEAT Limited has enhanced the production capabilities at its Sriperumbudur plant in Chennai, marking a strategic move to address the growing demand for premium tyres in both domestic and international markets. The facility has introduced advanced manufacturing lines capable of producing 22-inch SUV tyres, such as the SportDrive SUV ZR22, alongside new truck and bus radial sizes tailored for international fleet requirements. This update is part of the company's broader effort to shift its product portfolio toward high-value, technologically advanced segments, including offerings ready for electric vehicles.

Scaling Production and Financial Context

The initiative to upgrade this facility is part of a larger capital investment plan of ₹1,314 crore approved in January 2026. The company intends to add an annual production capacity of 3.5 million tyres by the first half of the 2028 financial year. While this expansion signals a push for long-term growth, the company’s recent financial performance highlights the challenges currently facing the business. In the first quarter of the 2027 financial year, CEAT reported a 22% increase in revenue compared to the previous year. However, net profit declined, primarily due to higher raw material costs and transition-related expenses linked to its acquisition of the Camso business.

Balancing Growth and Profitability

To manage the impact of rising raw material costs, which have been influenced by geopolitical tensions, the company implemented cumulative price hikes of approximately 7% by August 2026. These price adjustments are intended to protect profit margins, which have been under pressure across the industry. For shareholders, the core monitorable remains the balance between aggressive capacity expansion and the ability to maintain profitability. Large-scale, debt-funded projects inherently carry execution risks, and the success of this expansion will depend on whether the demand for premium tyres grows sufficiently to utilize the new capacity effectively.

Investor Monitorables

Investors may keep an eye on how the company manages its debt levels while continuing its investment projects. The stock, which has seen volatility and recently traded in the ₹3,220–₹3,230 range, often reacts to updates regarding profit margin recovery and raw material price stability. The company's ability to successfully integrate its newer acquisitions and pass on costs through pricing will be critical factors in the coming quarters. Monitoring the progress toward the FY2028 capacity target and any management commentary regarding margin trends will provide a clearer picture of the company's financial trajectory.
