BMW has launched its eighth-generation 3 Series, featuring an all-electric i3 model with a 912 km range and a high-performance M350 xDrive hybrid. Built on the new 'Neue Klasse' platform, the lineup includes advanced digital features like a 17.9-inch display. While the global rollout begins in late September, BMW has not yet announced pricing or launch timelines for the Indian market.
BMW has introduced the eighth generation of its 3 Series, signaling a major strategic shift by introducing an all-electric 'i3' sedan alongside the high-performance 'M350 xDrive' mild-hybrid variant. The new models are built on BMW’s proprietary 'Neue Klasse' platform, which is designed to serve as the foundation for the company’s future electric vehicle lineup. The electric i3 50 xDrive is designed for long-distance travel, featuring an electric motor setup that supports a range of up to 912 km on a single charge under the WLTP testing cycle. The system also supports high-power DC charging, allowing for a range boost of over 400 km within a ten-minute charge.
To facilitate this shift toward electrification, BMW has committed a €2 billion investment into its German manufacturing network. The company is retooling the Munich plant to focus entirely on electric vehicle production, while the Dingolfing factory will manage the production of traditional internal combustion and mild-hybrid models. This investment highlights the heavy capital requirement involved in transitioning from traditional engines to high-end electric platforms while maintaining current production volumes.
For those preferring traditional performance, the M350 xDrive utilizes a 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system. This configuration produces 443 hp, allowing the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds. The series also introduces a significant update to the cabin technology, replacing standard interfaces with a 17.9-inch Panoramic iDrive display integrated with Amazon Alexa AI. Additionally, the vehicles include the Motorway Assistant feature, which enables hands-free driving on highways in supported regions at speeds up to 130 km/h.
The global rollout for the new 3 Series is scheduled for late September in Europe. However, BMW has not yet disclosed specific launch timelines or pricing structures for the Indian market. For Indian investors and car buyers, the primary focus will be on when BMW decides to introduce this new technology locally. As the luxury vehicle segment in India increasingly shifts toward electric and hybrid models, the brand's ability to price these technologically advanced vehicles competitively will be the key factor for its future market share in the premium category.
