Ather Energy Stock Hits Highs After Q1 EBITDA Turnaround

Ather Energy reported an 89% revenue jump to ₹1,216.9 crore for Q1 FY27, with the company achieving its first positive EBITDA of ₹9 crore. While shares reached record highs, investors are balancing this growth against high valuations and margin risks. The market is now watching the upcoming launch of a new scooter platform and the commissioning of its new manufacturing facility.

Ather Energy shares have captured market attention following strong results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027. The company reported a revenue increase of 89% year-on-year to ₹1,216.9 crore, a significant improvement from the previous year. Most notably, the company turned its operating profit (EBITDA) positive, reporting ₹9 crore compared to a loss of ₹106 crore in the same period a year ago. This operational shift reflects better cost management and growing scale, with vehicle deliveries rising 81% to 83,173 units.

A key driver behind this performance is the strong market reception for the 'Rizta' scooter, alongside a growing revenue stream from software subscriptions and accessories, which now contribute 14% to total revenue. By designing critical components like battery packs in-house, the company maintains a level of control over its product ecosystem, which helps in differentiating its offerings in a crowded market.

Expansion remains a major focus for the company's growth strategy. A new electric scooter built on the company's modular 'EL' platform is scheduled for launch on August 29, 2026. To support this demand, the company is finalizing the setup of its new Factory 3.0 in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra. Production at this facility is expected to commence in Q3 FY27, aiming for an initial annual capacity of 500,000 units. The success of this facility in ramping up production will be crucial for the company's delivery targets.

Despite the positive momentum, investors should note the risks associated with the company's rapid growth. While the net loss narrowed by 71% to ₹51.1 crore, the business is still not net profitable. Furthermore, the stock's valuation, with price-to-book ratios often exceeding 13x, suggests that the market has already priced in expectations of strong execution. Any deviation from these targets could lead to volatility.

Margin pressure is another critical factor to watch. Rising commodity costs, including prices for rare-earth magnets and lithium-ion cells, pose a challenge to maintaining profitability. The company faces stiff competition from established players such as TVS Motor, Bajaj Auto, and Ola Electric, who are also aggressive in the electric two-wheeler space. This competition often limits the ability to pass on rising costs to customers without impacting demand.

The most important monitorables for the coming quarters will be the utilization rates at the new Factory 3.0, the market adoption of the upcoming EL-platform scooter, and the company's ability to protect its margins while navigating intense sector competition. Consistent ability to maintain positive EBITDA while scaling up will be the key test for the company's financial health.
