Motilal Oswal has maintained a 'Buy' rating on Ashok Leyland with a target price of Rs 198, following the company's strong Q1 FY27 results. Despite pressure on profit margins from higher commodity costs, the brokerage highlights record sales volumes and a healthy net cash position as key drivers for long-term growth.
Motilal Oswal has reiterated a 'Buy' rating on Ashok Leyland, setting a price target of Rs 198 per share. This outlook follows the commercial vehicle manufacturer's performance in the first quarter of the 2027 fiscal year, where the company saw record sales volumes despite facing challenges from rising raw material costs.
In the first quarter of FY27, Ashok Leyland recorded sales of 48,763 commercial vehicle units. This high demand helped drive consolidated revenue up by approximately 12% compared to the same period last year, reaching Rs 13,069.59 crore. While the revenue growth is positive, profit margins faced some pressure, slipping to 10.1% from 11.1% a year ago. The company noted that this dip was primarily due to higher commodity costs, which have been a recurring challenge for many players in the automotive sector.
A significant point of interest for investors is the company's financial health. Ashok Leyland maintained a net cash position of Rs 2,252 crore by the end of the first quarter. This healthy cash balance provides the company with more flexibility to fund its operations and future expansion plans without needing to take on significant new debt, a factor that differentiates it from some of its more leveraged peers.
Looking ahead, the brokerage noted that the company’s strategic push into non-truck segments, such as power solutions and defense, is helping to reduce its reliance on the cyclical truck market. This strategy is intended to make the company's revenue streams more stable over the long term.
However, shareholders should keep an eye on potential risks. While volumes are growing, the company remains sensitive to intense competition in the medium and heavy commercial vehicle segment. Additionally, global geopolitical uncertainties could impact export demand, and the company's ability to protect its profit margins will depend on how successfully it can manage ongoing commodity price volatility. Investors will likely monitor the upcoming quarterly updates to see if margin pressure begins to ease as management has suggested, and to track whether the company can maintain its current sales momentum.
