Amara Raja Energy Stock Stays Neutral As Lithium Push Begins

Motilal Oswal has maintained a neutral outlook on Amara Raja Energy and Mobility, setting a price target of ₹878. While the company is advancing its major lithium-ion battery projects in Telangana, the brokerage believes current valuations already account for these growth plans.

Amara Raja Energy and Mobility continues to balance its traditional lead-acid battery business with a massive push into new energy solutions. Despite the clear roadmap for its upcoming projects, financial analysts remain cautious regarding the stock's current valuation. Motilal Oswal Securities recently reiterated a neutral stance on the company, pinning its target price at ₹878, noting that the market has already factored in the company’s future growth prospects.

Scaling the Giga Corridor

The company is currently developing its Giga Corridor facility in Telangana, which serves as its primary hub for integrated lithium-ion battery manufacturing. According to the company's development timeline, the battery energy storage system facility is expected to begin operations by the end of 2026 with an initial capacity of 5 Gigawatt-hours, eventually reaching a capacity of 10 Gigawatt-hours. Following this, the giga cell factory is scheduled to start its first phase of operations in the second quarter of 2027, focusing on an initial capacity of 2 Gigawatt-hours using nickel-manganese-cobalt chemistry.

Capital Spending and Financial Focus

Amara Raja is committing significant capital toward its expansion goals, with planned spending between ₹15 billion and ₹17 billion for the 2027 fiscal year. While much of the focus is on new energy, the company continues to invest in its core lead-acid battery operations, allocating approximately ₹4 billion to that segment. Management remains optimistic about the battery energy storage system segment, projecting an industry-wide demand of 25 to 30 Gigawatt-hours in India by 2031. The core lead-acid business has also seen some relief recently due to changes in the Goods and Services Tax structure, which has supported segment stability.

Valuation and Market Context

Despite the clear strategy, investors are weighing the high cost of entering the capital-intensive lithium-ion market against the company's valuation. The stock is currently trading at a multiple of approximately 21.3 times estimated earnings for fiscal year 2027 and 17.3 times for fiscal year 2028. Analysts suggest that these valuations leave little room for error as the company transitions from traditional lead-acid technology to new-age batteries. The neutral rating reflects the view that the potential success of the new energy business is already reflected in the share price, rather than representing an undervalued opportunity.

Moving forward, the primary monitorables for investors will be the actual execution of the Giga Corridor project, the ability to manage debt levels during this period of high capital spending, and the company's ability to achieve competitive profit margins as it enters the lithium-ion space against both domestic and global rivals.
