Xiaomi is actively considering introducing its YU7 electric vehicle to the Indian market as it expands its global presence in electric mobility. Sudhin Mathur, COO of Xiaomi India, highlighted India's ongoing importance to the company's diversification beyond smartphones into connected mobility and smart ecosystems.
Global Strategy Alignment
Mathur stated that Xiaomi introduces products to various markets based on their readiness. "We keep evaluating in terms of readiness, maturity and product fitment," he told CNBC-TV18, indicating that while India is a key market, specific launch dates are not yet set. This aligns with Xiaomi's "Human × Car × Home" strategy, which positions electric vehicles as intelligent, connected devices within its ecosystem of smartphones, home appliances, and AIoT products powered by HyperOS.
Smart Car Integration
The company's EV strategy focuses on building a cohesive consumer ecosystem. Mathur explained that the YU7 is envisioned as a "smart car" capable of connecting with users' devices and analyzing driving patterns, making intelligence and connectivity a core focus.
China Success and Global Ambitions
Since its launch in China in April 2024, the YU7 has seen strong demand, with sales over 600,000 units in roughly two years and a target of more than 550,000 vehicles this year. Xiaomi plans to enter international EV markets starting in 2027, with Europe as the initial overseas region.
India's EV Ecosystem Challenges
While the YU7, with its nearly 700 horsepower and rapid acceleration, has drawn global attention, Mathur acknowledged that India's EV ecosystem needs further development. He noted that while consumer interest in EVs is growing, crucial elements like charging infrastructure require significant improvement before a final decision on the Indian launch can be made.
