Global bio-solutions leader Novonesis is set to invest up to ₹3,000 crore in its Patalganga facility in Maharashtra over the next three years. The expansion aims to boost production of enzymes and biological technologies for the biofuels, food, and agricultural sectors. This move underscores the company's long-term bet on India’s growing bio-economy and its strategy to improve local supply chain capabilities.
Novonesis, the global bio-solutions company formed through the 2024 merger of Novozymes and Chr. Hansen, has announced plans to invest between ₹2,500 crore and ₹3,000 crore in its manufacturing site in Patalganga, Maharashtra. The company intends to complete this capital expansion over the next 24 to 36 months, significantly increasing its local production capacity.
The Patalganga facility is a strategic asset for the company. According to company leadership, the site is currently operating at only a fraction of its total land potential, with roughly 90% of the land area still available for future development. This space will now be utilized to house new production lines designed to support the rising demand for biological solutions within India and the broader region.
A primary driver for this investment is India’s increasing focus on sustainable energy and modernized agricultural practices. Novonesis provides specialized enzymes and yeast technologies that assist ethanol manufacturers in speeding up fermentation processes and lowering energy consumption. While the company does not produce fuel directly, it serves as a critical supplier to the biofuel industry, helping producers improve yields and cost efficiency.
The company is also expanding its footprint in the agricultural sector. Recent trials of its biological products in regions like Karnataka have demonstrated the potential to increase crop yields, such as in sugarcane farming. By transitioning from chemical-heavy processes to biological alternatives, the company aims to support Indian manufacturers in improving both sustainability and operational output.
Although Novonesis is not listed on the Indian stock exchanges—it is primarily traded on the NASDAQ OMX Copenhagen—its operations have a significant impact on the domestic supply chain. It acts as an upstream partner for various listed companies in the food, beverage, health, and energy sectors.
