The study identified 15 different vertebrate species within the dhole diet. Chital was the most common prey, appearing in 70.4% of samples, followed by sambar at 66.9%. The research noted that while larger animals like gaur and nilgai are present in the region, they were rarely detected in the dhole's diet. This preference for specific medium-sized deer suggests a particular hunting strategy or limitation.

Seasonal Dietary Patterns

The dholes demonstrated seasonal flexibility in their hunting. While chital and sambar remained the primary food sources during the winter, the monsoon season saw an increase in the consumption of wild boar and Indian hare. Researchers believe this shift may be a response to the difficulty of hunting larger animals in dense, waterlogged forests during the rainy season, or simply because smaller prey become more accessible during those months.

Implications for Human-Wildlife Conflict

A significant finding of the study is that domestic livestock accounts for only a negligible portion of the dhole diet. Any instances of cattle or buffalo remains found in the samples were likely the result of scavenging on kills originally made by other larger carnivores, such as tigers or leopards. The researchers highlight that ensuring sufficient densities of wild prey in forest areas is an effective strategy to keep wild dogs away from human settlements. By supporting the natural prey base, conservation efforts can help reduce the frequency of negative interactions between local communities and wild carnivores. This research, published in the journal PLOS ONE, emphasizes that protecting the natural food chain is a practical way to mitigate human-wildlife conflict in rural forest-fringe regions.
