Milky Mist Launches Contract Farming to Secure Milk Supply

Milky Mist Dairy is adopting a contract farming model to tackle slowing national milk production growth. By partnering with larger farms and improving cattle feed, the ₹3,200-crore company aims to bridge the supply-demand gap. This initiative is a key focus as the company prepares for a potential IPO.

Detailed Coverage

Milky Mist Dairy Food, based in Erode, Tamil Nadu, is moving toward a contract farming model to secure its supply chain. The dairy sector in India is currently facing a challenge where demand for milk products is growing at 6%-7% annually, while milk production growth has slowed to approximately 3.5%-3.78%. For a manufacturer of value-added products like paneer and mozzarella cheese, which require high volumes of raw milk, this supply-demand gap presents a significant operational pressure.

Scaling Up Production Through Partner Farms

To stabilize its procurement, the company has begun partnering with farmers owning larger land parcels. Over the last 18 months, Milky Mist has established 500 such farms, typically hosting 15 to 25 cows each, with a future goal of scaling these units to 50-100 animals. The company assists these farmers in accessing bank loans for cattle investment, aiming to create a more consistent and predictable milk supply than the traditional procurement from small, fragmented landholdings.

Improving Feed for Higher Quality Yield

A major part of this strategy is shifting from traditional feed practices to balanced nutrition. Many dairy farmers in India rely on dry fodder like paddy or wheat residue, which can limit milk yield. Milky Mist is now supporting its contract farmers in growing green fodder and supplying Total Mixed Ration, or TMR, to improve the nutritional profile of the cattle diet. To encourage higher quality, the company offers an incentive of 50 paise per liter above the standard market rate for milk that meets specific quality benchmarks.

Financial and IPO Context

With daily procurement currently reaching 14 lakh liters, Milky Mist produces significant quantities of paneer and mozzarella cheese. As an IPO-bound company, the stability of its raw material supply is vital for maintaining profit margins. While the company intends to maintain its existing network of marginal farmers, the shift toward contract farming suggests a move to de-risk its operations from the volatility of the broader dairy market. Factors such as climate fluctuations and varying feed costs often impact the production output of smaller, independent producers, which can directly affect a company's manufacturing costs and product availability.

Investors should monitor how effectively the company scales this contract farming model and whether it helps in protecting margins against potential milk price volatility. The ability to control feed quality and animal health will be a key factor in determining if the company can sustain its growth in the competitive dairy processing sector. Future updates regarding the expansion of these farm units and the impact on procurement costs will be important indicators of the model’s success.
