India Streamlines Visa Process for Foreign Experts
India has announced a significant overhaul of its visa policy, introducing a simplified and streamlined process to facilitate the entry of foreign professionals, including engineers and technical experts. This strategic move aims to support critical production-related activities for Indian companies, such as machine installation, quality checks, training, and plant design, thereby enhancing the nation's manufacturing capabilities.

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has rolled out a new online module on the National Single Window System (NSWS). This digital platform allows Indian companies to digitally generate sponsorship letters for inviting foreign professionals under the e-Production Investment Business Visa, also known as the e-B-4 Visa. This reform is a direct response to challenges faced by domestic manufacturers who often require specialized overseas expertise for installing and maintaining imported machinery. Previously, the visa application process was described as cumbersome and time-consuming, involving multiple layers of approvals.
The e-B-4 Visa Explained
The new e-B-4 Visa category has been created under the business visa regime specifically for foreign subject matter specialists, engineers, and technical personnel engaged by Indian companies. These experts can now travel to India for a wide array of crucial tasks. These include installation and commissioning of equipment, essential maintenance services, production support, IT infrastructure ramp-up, comprehensive training programs, supply chain development for vendor empanelment, and plant design and commissioning. Senior management visits for production investment activities are also covered.
Key Reforms and Benefits
Officials highlighted that the new mechanism is designed to substantially reduce processing times. The requirement for recommendations from line ministries has been removed, and forms have been simplified. Automatic data population and authentication through existing government databases like the Ministry of Corporate Affairs and the GST Network eliminate the need for separate approvals. As of its launch, 129 sponsorship letters have already been generated through the NSWS module, indicating immediate uptake.
