Agricultural planting across India has faced significant hurdles this season, with kharif crop coverage trailing last year’s pace by 6%. As of July 17, farmers have completed sowing on 65.82 million hectares, a reduction driven primarily by a widespread monsoon shortfall that has delayed essential field operations.
The decline in acreage is most pronounced in the pulses segment, which saw a 15.1% drop to 6.92 million hectares compared to the same period in 2025. Within this category, arhar and moong cultivation have been particularly hard hit, recording declines of approximately 18% and 11%, respectively. Given India's persistent dependency on imports to balance domestic demand for pulses, any sustained reduction in acreage can lead to supply constraints and higher food prices.
Other major crop categories are also showing negative trends. Coarse cereals and millets have seen an 11.2% decrease in planted area, largely due to an 18.5% fall in bajra cultivation. Additionally, oilseed and cotton sowing are lagging by 5.5% and 6%, respectively. While rice planting has shown more resilience with only a marginal 0.8% decrease to 16.64 million hectares, the broader agricultural sector remains under pressure from uneven rainfall distribution.
The underlying cause of this slowdown is a persistent rainfall deficit. Between June 1 and July 19, India received 253.2 mm of rain, which is 24% below the long-period average. The regional impact is significant, with East and Northeast India reporting the largest deficit at 35%, followed by the Southern Peninsula at 27%, Northwest India at 23%, and Central India at 14%.
Beyond immediate sowing delays, the moisture stress is reflected in reservoir levels. Live storage across 166 major reservoirs stands at roughly 34% of capacity. When compared to the same period in 2025, current storage is down by 39% and sits 1.8% below the 10-year average. This data points to potential irrigation challenges in the coming weeks if rainfall does not recover significantly.
For investors, the key monitorable will be the monsoon's progression through the remainder of July and August. A continued deficit could weigh on rural demand and put pressure on the margins of companies in the fertilizer, pesticide, and seed sectors, as reduced planting activity often correlates with lower demand for agricultural inputs. Conversely, if rainfall patterns normalize, it may allow for late-season catch-up sowing, though the final yields remain sensitive to weather conditions throughout the growth cycle.
