Sowing for India’s Kharif crops fell to 894.22 lakh hectares by July-end, a 3% drop compared to the previous year. The decline, driven by lower acreage in rice and pulses, coincides with a 12% rainfall deficit and ongoing El Nino risks. This pattern could impact agricultural output and food inflation trends, making water storage levels a crucial factor for farmers in the coming weeks.
Data released by the Ministry of Agriculture confirms that the total area sown for Kharif crops across India reached 894.22 lakh hectares by the end of July. This reflects a 3% decline from the 920.71 lakh hectares recorded during the same period last year. While the current progress covers roughly 81% of the typical seasonal sowing area, the year-on-year reduction highlights the challenges faced by the agricultural sector during the current monsoon season.
Crop-Specific Acreage Trends
The impact on major crops has been uneven. Paddy, which is the most significant Kharif crop, saw its total sown area drop to 301.49 lakh hectares from 308.39 lakh hectares a year ago. Pulses have also faced pressure, with acreage falling to 95.18 lakh hectares compared to 101.60 lakh hectares in the previous season. Notable declines in pulses were led by lower sowing in arhar and moong crops, although urad managed to buck the trend with an increase in coverage.
Coarse cereals also saw a contraction in area, moving to 157.77 lakh hectares from 170.60 lakh hectares. Conversely, the oilseeds segment showed resilience with a marginal rise in coverage to 172.32 lakh hectares, supported by groundnut and sunflower planting. Sugarcane acreage saw a slight uptick, whereas cotton cultivation declined to 103.54 lakh hectares from 106.06 lakh hectares. States such as Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh have reported some of the more significant shortfalls in sowing coverage.
Monsoon and Reservoir Pressure
The decline in sowing is largely attributed to irregular rainfall patterns. As of August 2, the India Meteorological Department reported a 12% deficit in southwest monsoon rainfall. Compounding this, the presence of El Nino conditions in the equatorial Pacific continues to create uncertainty for the remaining duration of the monsoon. Agricultural output remains sensitive to these weather patterns, as timely rainfall is essential for crop development.
Water availability is another critical metric for the industry. As of July 30, live storage in 166 major reservoirs across India stood at 65.37% of the levels seen during the same period last year, and 92.99% of normal storage levels. While these reservoirs are not critically depleted, the lower storage compared to the previous year signals a degree of water stress in specific agricultural zones.
Investors and market analysts typically track these figures to understand potential supply-side impacts on food inflation and the financial health of agricultural-dependent companies, including those in fertilizers, seeds, and farm machinery. The next update on sowing progress and monsoon distribution will be vital in determining the final harvest volume and its subsequent effect on commodity prices.
