The limited supply that did emerge came largely from higher reaches where flowering was delayed, but overall volumes remain minimal. Compared to lower-quality honey varieties that sell for around Rs 500 per kilogram, the loss of this high-value product significantly impacts the revenue potential for local apiarists.

Rising Costs and Operational Challenges

Beyond direct production losses, beekeepers are struggling with the rising financial burden of seasonal migration. To ensure colony survival during harsh winters, many farmers transport their hives to warmer regions like Rajasthan and Punjab. This process involves substantial expenses for fuel, transport, and labor, with some beekeepers reporting annual costs of approximately Rs 350,000. When yields drop drastically, these fixed migration costs become difficult to recover, discouraging many from continuing the practice.

Environmental Pressures and Pollination Risks

Entomologists and agricultural experts have noted that erratic weather is not the only stressor. Cold spells have reduced bee movement, while temperature spikes have shortened the life of blossoms, limiting the time available for nectar collection. Furthermore, the increased use of pesticides in orchards and fields has contributed to higher bee mortality rates. This decline in healthy bee populations is particularly concerning for the broader horticultural sector in Kashmir. Apple orchards rely heavily on these bees for pollination, and a reduction in bee activity can negatively impact fruit yields and quality in the coming cycles.

Future Outlook for Apiculture

There is ongoing research aimed at addressing these challenges. Scientists at the CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine are developing winter management protocols. The goal is to create stable hive conditions within the valley, which would theoretically allow beekeepers to keep colonies locally and eliminate the need for expensive, risky migration. However, these technologies are still being finalized and have not yet been widely adopted by the farming community. The key monitorable for the industry will be the successful transfer of these management protocols to local beekeepers and whether they can effectively mitigate the impacts of future climate volatility.
