Geopolitical and Market Risks

Global supply chain volatility remains a major risk for the fertilizer sector. Geopolitical tensions, particularly disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, have caused spikes in the prices of natural gas and ammonia, which are essential raw materials for production. Manufacturers, such as Deepak Fertilisers and Petrochemicals Corp, have managed to deliver strong quarterly results—such as the recent reported net profit of ₹490 crore—by navigating these input challenges. However, the reliance on imported energy and raw materials means that any further global instability could directly pressure profit margins across the industry.

Potential Policy Shifts

The Economic Survey for FY26 has signaled a need for reform, suggesting a calibrated increase in the retail price of urea. The government’s goal is to encourage more judicious use of fertilizers and correct nutrient imbalances in the soil. For investors, the key area to watch is how these policy changes are implemented. A move toward a direct cash transfer system for farmers, as proposed, could potentially alter the subsidy dynamics and change the revenue models for fertilizer manufacturers.
