India Reports 6.38 Lakh Hectares of Man-Made Land Degradation

The government informed Parliament that 6.38 lakh hectares of land are affected by human-induced degradation, as per 2021 data. This highlights a long-term challenge for agricultural productivity, making the national soil restoration target of 26 million hectares by 2030 a key monitorable for the agriculture and sustainability sectors.

The central government recently informed Parliament that approximately 0.638 million hectares, or 6.38 lakh hectares, of land in India are affected by human-induced desertification and land degradation. This data, sourced from the 2021 Desertification and Land Degradation Atlas published by ISRO’s Space Applications Centre, highlights an ongoing environmental challenge that impacts the country’s vast agricultural landscape.

While the government stated that it has not conducted a specific assessment on how this particular area of degradation currently impacts agricultural output or crop productivity, the data serves as a reference point for long-term land management and environmental policy. For investors and stakeholders in the agriculture, fertilizer, and agro-chemical sectors, land health is a critical factor influencing long-term profitability and demand.

To address land degradation, the government has set a national commitment to restore 26 million hectares of degraded land by 2030. As of mid-2026, over 21.76 million hectares have reportedly been brought under restoration. Achieving these targets requires sustained investment in soil health and changes in farming practices.

Government initiatives such as the Crop Diversification Programme (CDP) are central to these efforts. Launched to move away from water-intensive paddy cultivation in states like Punjab, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh, the program incentivizes farmers to shift toward crops like pulses, oilseeds, and coarse cereals. This shift is intended to improve soil health, conserve water, and reduce the long-term reliance on heavy chemical inputs that can degrade soil quality over time.

Additionally, the mandatory supply of 100% neem-coated urea by all producers and importers since 2015 remains a key policy intervention. This measure is designed to improve nitrogen uptake by crops and reduce environmental nitrogen losses, thereby helping manage soil health more efficiently. The success of these programs in maintaining soil fertility is a monitorable factor for agri-input companies, as sustained soil health supports stable crop yields and consistent demand for fertilizers and agricultural solutions.
