Supply Chain Vulnerabilities
The app's rollout comes amid heightened supply risks from disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz due to Middle East conflicts. Crisil Ratings estimates domestic urea and complex fertilizer output could fall by 10-15% due to these supply chain issues. The government had initially restricted gas supply to urea plants but later increased it through alternative arrangements to secure production.
Subsidy Burden and Government Action
Urea is India's most consumed fertilizer, and the nation relies heavily on imports. Urea subsidies alone reached ₹1.26 lakh crore in FY26. To address potential supply shortages, the country holds about three months of fertilizer inventory and anticipates imports from alternative sources. The Cabinet Committee on Security has reviewed measures to maintain urea production and coordinate overseas supplies.
Mitigating Production Drops
Government directives allocating a significant portion of gas to urea manufacturers are expected to cushion potential production drops. State governments are tasked with daily monitoring, conducting raids, and taking strict action against black marketing, hoarding, and diversion to ensure farmers have adequate fertilizer supplies.
