Gujarat Extends Kharif MSP Registration to Oct 24

The Gujarat government has pushed the MSP registration deadline for groundnut, soybean, moong, and urad to October 24, 2026. This extension accommodates higher production volumes and ensures farmers have adequate time to access government procurement channels. The move comes as the state simultaneously manages Rabi season preparations via the i-Khedut portal.

The Gujarat state government has extended the registration deadline for Minimum Support Price (MSP) procurement of four key Kharif crops—groundnut, moong, soybean, and urad—by 15 days. Originally scheduled to close on October 9, the registration window is now open until October 24, 2026. Agriculture Minister Jitubhai Vaghani announced the decision following requests from legislative representatives and farming cooperatives to better align procurement efforts with the harvest cycle.

Impact of Production Trends

The decision to extend the timeline reflects significant shifts in agricultural output across the state. Current field data indicates robust performance for major oilseeds and pulses. Groundnut cultivation has reached 20.7 lakh hectares, an 8 percent increase over the three-year rolling average. Soybean acreage has similarly climbed to 3.04 lakh hectares, while urad production occupies 93,000 hectares, marking a 13 percent increase above recent norms. Conversely, the state has observed a 41 percent decline in moong acreage, which has fallen to 32,800 hectares.

For the broader agricultural market, this surge in groundnut and soybean volume means that local supply chains may face intense pressure during the peak procurement window. While the MSP provides a necessary price floor for farmers, protecting them from price crashes when supply is high, the large influx of goods can strain state-run procurement centers. Market participants often track these figures to gauge potential supply-demand dynamics in the edible oil and pulse segments.

Operational Risks and Next Steps

The extended registration window places a logistical onus on the government to ensure that procurement centers are equipped to handle the increased volume efficiently. A primary operational risk involves the management of storage facilities and the timely processing of payments. The government relies heavily on Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) systems, which require Aadhaar-seeded bank accounts. Any delay in linking these accounts or in the verification process at the procurement end can lead to payment lags, a frequent concern for farmers during high-volume seasons.

Simultaneously, the state Agriculture Department has opened the i-Khedut portal for Rabi season support. Farmers have until October 15 to apply for certified seeds, mini-kits, and other agricultural inputs. Investors and stakeholders should also note that cotton MSP procurement remains a separate process, with registrations currently open via the 'Kapas Kisan' app until October 31, 2026. The next critical monitorable for this sector will be the actual procurement volume at these centers compared to government targets, which will clarify the effectiveness of the support measures and the impact on local market prices.
