Digital Crop Survey Expands to 45 Crore Plots This Kharif

India is scaling its Digital Crop Survey to cover 45 crore plots across 5.5 lakh villages this Kharif season. The initiative aims to improve crop production estimates, optimize government procurement, and provide personalized farming advice using integrated Farmer IDs.

The Indian government is significantly widening the scope of its Digital Crop Survey (DCS) for the current Kharif season, targeting a total of 45 crore land plots across 5.53 lakh villages. This expansion follows a notable increase from the 31.3 crore plots surveyed during the previous Rabi season, reflecting a systematic effort to digitize agricultural data at the farm level.

At the center of this initiative is the Agri Stack project, which recently earned a gold award at the National Awards for e-Governance. By integrating land records with more than 10.15 crore Farmer IDs created across 20 states, the government is building a framework to move toward data-driven agriculture. This digital infrastructure is intended to assist farmers with personalized advisories on crop selection and scientific cultivation techniques.

Beyond field-level data collection, the government is using remote sensing satellite technology to cross-verify the survey results. This validation process is designed to ensure accuracy, which is essential for developing near-real-time production estimates. For regions such as the northeastern states and specific union territories where formal land records are still being digitized, the government is implementing alternative satellite-based mechanisms to ensure comprehensive coverage.

For investors and market observers, the most important aspect of this data collection is its impact on the agricultural supply chain. The data gathered through Farmer IDs is already being utilized to optimize the Minimum Support Price-based procurement system. States such as Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh have reported operational savings by using this digitized data to streamline the purchasing process.

Progress across states remains varied. Regions like Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka have exceeded their initial targets for Farmer ID generation. Meanwhile, some states are still in the preliminary stages; for example, West Bengal has signed a memorandum of understanding to start the process, while others like Jammu and Kashmir, Goa, and Sikkim are currently organizing their land record systems to support the initiative.

The next phase of this project will likely see increased reliance on this data for managing agricultural credit, insurance, and market interventions. The government's ability to maintain high data accuracy and improve the speed of procurement will be the key indicators to watch as the system scales toward full national coverage.
