Climate Change Risks Lower Milk Yields in India's $6B Dairy Sector

Rising heat stress in India is threatening the dairy sector, which produces nearly a quarter of the world's milk. Farmers face lower yields, reduced cattle fertility, and higher mortality rates, putting significant economic pressure on an industry supporting 80 million people. Climate-resilient infrastructure and shifts in cattle breeding may become necessary for future stability.

India’s position as the world's largest milk producer is facing a silent threat from climate change, specifically through heat stress that impacts dairy livestock. With national milk production reaching nearly 248 million tonnes in the 2024-25 period, the industry is a pillar of the rural economy, supporting around 80 million farmers. However, prolonged periods of extreme heat and humidity are creating significant challenges for the health and productivity of high-yield cattle.

Impact on Productivity and Cattle Health

When temperatures rise, high-yield crossbred cattle struggle to cool down, causing them to eat less and drink more water. This physical stress redirects energy away from milk production, leading to a direct drop in output. Research indicates that during severe heat waves, milk production can fall by as much as 10%. In the North Indian plains alone, annual losses from these climate-induced yield drops are estimated to reach ₹1,200 crore. Beyond immediate volume loss, the industry faces long-term risks such as decreased fertility rates and higher animal mortality, which can erode the capital base for small-scale dairy farmers.

Regional Vulnerability and Resource Pressure

Major milk-producing states, including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh, are currently the most vulnerable to these changing weather patterns. The challenge is amplified by existing shortages in fodder and water. Dairy farming is water-intensive, and as groundwater levels face pressure across these regions, the competition for water resources may increase operational costs. The combination of heat-stressed animals needing more nutritional support and a tightening supply of quality feed could compress profit margins for both small farmers and organized dairy cooperatives.

Strategies for Industry Adaptation

To mitigate these risks, the dairy industry is looking toward climate-smart adaptations. This includes building shelters designed for better ventilation and cooling, as well as providing mineral-rich feed to help cattle manage heat stress. There is also a growing push to promote indigenous, heat-tolerant cattle breeds like Gir and Sahiwal, which are more naturally resilient to high temperatures compared to some imported crossbred varieties. Technology-based advisory systems that warn farmers about upcoming heat waves are also being deployed to help with early management.

Investors and stakeholders in the dairy ecosystem, including organized dairy companies and feed manufacturers, will likely monitor how effectively these adaptation measures are implemented. The ability of the sector to maintain consistent supply volumes and quality despite these environmental pressures remains the key monitorable for the long-term sustainability of the industry.
