Assam’s 'Matsya Paripushti' Initiative Wins Karmashree Award

The Assam government has received the Karmashree Award 2026 for its 'Matsya Paripushti' program, which integrates nutrient-rich fish powder into school and Anganwadi meals. This initiative, backed by scientific research from ICAR-CIFT and international partnerships, aims to tackle child malnutrition while supporting local fisheries supply chains. The project is currently being integrated into national schemes like PM-POSHAN and the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana.

The Assam government has been awarded the Karmashree Award 2026 for its 'Matsya Paripushti' (Complete Nourishment through Fish) initiative. This program focuses on addressing child malnutrition by developing and integrating nutrient-rich powder derived from small indigenous fish species into daily meals at schools and Anganwadi centers.

The project marks a notable step in translating agricultural research into public policy. It stems from a collaborative research program initiated in 2019 between the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (ICAR-CIFT) and WorldFish. The technical expertise provided by ICAR-CIFT allowed for the creation of an affordable, stable fish-based food product designed to improve dietary diversity in government-run nutrition programs.

From an economic perspective, the initiative holds implications for the local fisheries sector. By creating a consistent demand for small indigenous fish species, the program aims to strengthen local value chains and provide economic opportunities for women’s self-help groups involved in processing and supply. The scalability of the model is now being linked to major national schemes, including the PM-POSHAN nutrition program and the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), which supports the sustainable development of the fisheries sector.

While the program addresses social and nutritional goals, it also faces ecological challenges. The long-term success and scalability of this model depend on the consistent availability of small indigenous fish. Environmental factors, including the degradation of local wetlands and the risk of over-exploitation of natural fish stocks, remain critical risks that could impact the sustainability of the required raw material supply. Proper resource management will be essential to ensure that the increased demand for these specific fish species does not negatively impact local aquatic ecosystems.
