Agri-tech firm Agrograde has installed its new automated onion grading system in Pimpalgaon, Maharashtra, to boost processing efficiency. The machine aims to sort 10 tonnes of onions per hour with a claimed 80% reduction in labor costs. Agrograde, an Indian agri-tech startup, has deployed its latest automated onion grading system, the GradePlus Pro, at a facility in Pimpalgaon, Maharashtra. This location is a major hub for onion trading and exports. The deployment focuses on resolving longstanding efficiency issues that typically occur during the post-harvest stage of onion farming.

Impact on Processing Efficiency

The new system is capable of processing up to 10 tonnes of onions per hour. According to the company, this level of automation is designed to reduce the labor required for sorting by approximately 80% when compared to traditional manual methods. Additionally, the firm claims the system achieves a 99% accuracy rate, which helps in creating a more consistent and higher-quality batch of produce before it reaches the market.

Addressing Supply Chain Gaps

The Indian onion supply chain remains heavily dependent on manual labor, which often leads to inconsistent grading and physical damage to the produce. A common challenge for traders is that the delicate outer skin of Indian onion varieties often gets scuffed or peeled during manual handling. This damage reduces the vegetable's shelf life and can result in lower prices, especially in international markets where quality standards are strict.

To mitigate this, Agrograde utilizes what it terms Wave Motion Technology. This design is intended to move onions through the grading line with minimal abrasive contact, aiming to reduce skin damage while automating the unloading and bagging process.

Agrograde, which operates under the name Occipital Technologies Private Limited, has been developing these sorting and weighing systems since 2018. The company reports that it has already deployed over 130 machines across 14 Indian states.
