U.S. Approves Key Defence Support for India
The U.S. Department of State has authorized a major foreign military sale, clearing the path for India to acquire crucial support services for its existing fleet of AH-64E Apache attack helicopters and M777A2 Ultra-Light Howitzers. The approved packages are valued at an estimated $198.2 million for the Apache support and $230 million for the howitzers.
Strategic Partnership Enhancement
This approval signals a continued strengthening of the U.S.-India strategic relationship. The Department of State highlighted that these sales will support U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives by enhancing the capabilities of a key defence partner. The move is expected to improve India's ability to counter current and future regional threats and bolster its homeland defence.
Key Contractors and Scope of Services
Major defense contractors Boeing Company and Lockheed Martin are slated to be the principal suppliers for the Apache helicopter support services. For the M777 howitzers, BAE Systems, based in the U.K., will be the primary contractor. The requested services encompass a broad range, including engineering, technical, and logistics support, along with personnel training, technical data, and spare parts, ensuring the long-term operational readiness of India's defence equipment.
Regional Stability and Defence Readiness
Officials stated that the proposed sales will not disrupt the basic military balance in the region and will have no adverse impact on U.S. defence readiness. The U.S. government believes India can seamlessly integrate these support services into its armed forces, contributing to political stability and economic progress in the Indo-Pacific and South Asia. The deal proceeds under the Foreign Military Sale (FMS) framework.
