Building India's Defence AI Prowess
Recognizing the growing importance of artificial intelligence in modern defence, India's Ministry of Defence is moving ahead with plans for a Rs 300 crore Centre of Excellence. The facility aims to develop bespoke AI applications tailored to India's specific operational needs, covering diverse terrains and climatic conditions. Advanced discussions are underway with domestic AI firms, including the startup Sarvam, to spearhead the creation of sophisticated AI systems for surveillance, reconnaissance, and strategic decision-making, thereby enhancing the nation's technological independence.
Sarvam AI's Growing Role
Sarvam AI is positioned to be a key partner in this national initiative. The company, backed by prominent investors like Lightspeed, Peak XV, and Khosla Ventures, is reportedly seeking substantial new funding at a valuation around $1.5 billion. Earlier this year, Sarvam introduced open-source AI models, such as Sarvam-30B and Sarvam-105B, alongside tools for speech, vision, and enterprise applications, with a focus on Indian languages. The firm has also secured a government subsidy of nearly Rs 220 crore from the Ministry of Electronics and IT to support its development of sovereign AI models.
