Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Russia's Public Joint Stock Company United Aircraft Corporation (PJSC-UAC) for the production of the SJ-100 civil commuter aircraft. The signing ceremony took place in Moscow, Russia.
The SJ-100 is a twin-engine, narrow-body aircraft. HAL notes that over 200 units of this aircraft type have already been produced and are in operation with more than 16 commercial airline operators.
Under this agreement, HAL will acquire the rights to manufacture the SJ-100 aircraft specifically for domestic customers in India. This collaboration signifies a major milestone as it will be the first instance where a complete passenger aircraft is produced within India. The last comparable project was HAL's production of the AVRO HS748, which ran from 1961 to 1988.
Projections indicate that the Indian aviation sector will require over 200 jets of this category within the next ten years to enhance regional connectivity. Additionally, approximately 350 more aircraft may be needed to serve nearby international tourist destinations in the Indian Ocean region.
Impact:
This MoU is expected to boost India's indigenous aircraft manufacturing capabilities, foster technological advancements, create jobs, and potentially reduce reliance on imported aircraft for regional routes. It aligns with the government's 'Make in India' initiative and could position India as a hub for aircraft production.
