EON Space Labs Secures Patent for 502g MIRA Telescope

Hyderabad-based EON Space Labs has received a patent for its 502-gram MIRA imaging system, a compact telescope for space and defense. This technology aims to lower costs for satellite operators and support domestic defense surveillance. The company is now testing the system in upcoming ISRO and SpaceX launches while adapting it for the Indian Army and Navy under the iDEX framework.

EON Space Labs, a Hyderabad-based aerospace firm, has been granted a patent by the Indian Patent Office for its MIRA imaging system. This proprietary hardware is an ultra-compact, space-grade optical telescope designed to capture high-definition multispectral imagery. Weighing only 502 grams, the system is engineered to be a lightweight and efficient alternative for satellite operators, potentially reducing the costs associated with Earth observation services in sectors like agriculture and maritime logistics.

The technology represents an effort to establish indigenous space-grade optical capabilities. However, the path to commercial readiness involves building flight heritage, which can be complex in the aerospace industry. The MIRA system was previously deployed on the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) PSLV-C62 mission earlier this year. During that mission, an upper-stage anomaly impacted the deployment of the payload. Despite this, the mission served to validate the hardware’s fundamental integration and readiness for space conditions. The company is now focused on further demonstrating the technology, with an upcoming launch scheduled on an ISRO Small Satellite Launch Vehicle mission. Additionally, the system is set to be integrated into the MOI-1A orbital computing satellite, which is planned for launch via a SpaceX Transporter-18 mission in October 2026.

A significant part of the company's growth strategy is its alignment with the Ministry of Defence’s Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) framework. EON Space Labs is currently adapting its imaging technology for national security applications, specifically developing a land-based version named 'Multisight.' This system is intended for long-range surveillance requirements by the Indian Army and the Indian Navy. By transitioning this engineering from orbital space applications to ground-based tactical use, the company aims to reduce the domestic defense sector's reliance on expensive, imported optical imaging systems.

For participants in the Indian space-tech and defense sectors, the key monitorable will be the company's ability to successfully execute its upcoming satellite missions and demonstrate the system’s performance consistency in real-world scenarios. As EON Space Labs seeks to move from the research and development phase to broader commercial and military deployment, its ability to maintain operational success will be critical for its long-term positioning in the growing domestic space-tech ecosystem.
