Bhubaneswar-based BonV Aero is setting up a ₹300 crore manufacturing plant to boost production to 500 high-altitude drones per month. The startup is developing heavy-lift unmanned aircraft capable of carrying 100 kg payloads in challenging mountainous defence terrain, while also targeting international growth through the US-based GENIUS NY accelerator program.
BonV Aero, a drone manufacturer based in Bhubaneswar, is planning to scale its operations significantly with a new manufacturing facility requiring an investment of ₹300 crore. The expansion is aimed at increasing production capacity to 500 units per month, up from its current capability of approximately 200 units, as the company targets the specialised defence logistics market.
The core of the company’s expansion strategy is the development of a heavy-lift unmanned aircraft platform designed specifically for high-altitude operations. High-altitude environments present significant technical challenges, as thinner air reduces the lift available to rotors and extreme cold puts additional pressure on battery and propulsion systems. To address these hurdles, BonV Aero has opted for an aluminium-alloy monocoque body structure rather than the carbon-fibre typically seen in smaller drones. This design choice is aimed at improving durability and performance in freezing temperatures found in mountainous regions.
The new platform is being built to carry a payload of 100 kg at altitudes exceeding 10,000 feet, with an operational range of more than 100 km. These capabilities are intended to address the requirements of military logistics, where delivering supplies to remote, high-altitude posts remains a logistical challenge. The company’s propulsion system features a design where multiple rotors remain active during the cruise phase, and it utilizes a combination of battery and fuel-cell technology to extend flight time and capacity.
Beyond domestic manufacturing, BonV Aero is seeking to expand its footprint through the GENIUS NY accelerator program in the United States. Participation in this year-long program allows the company to engage with the international uncrewed-systems industry and compete for investment awards totaling up to $3 million. This international exposure is part of a broader move to establish the company’s technology on a global scale.
For the Indian defence and drone sector, the ability of startups to move from prototyping to large-scale, reliable manufacturing is a critical monitorable. While in-house development and indigenous manufacturing are priorities for defence procurement, the success of such platforms depends heavily on passing rigorous field trials and meeting the high reliability standards required by the military. The company’s future performance will depend on the successful commissioning of its new manufacturing plant, the ability to maintain cost-efficiency while scaling production, and securing long-term defence contracts.
