Two soldiers died and one officer is in critical condition following a Type 59 tank explosion during a training drill in Chattogram, Bangladesh. The military has initiated an inquiry into the failure of the legacy Chinese-origin armor. A routine field firing exercise at the Hathazari range in Chattogram, Bangladesh, resulted in a fatal accident on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. A Chinese-origin Type 59 main battle tank suffered a catastrophic failure, leading to an explosion that killed two Bangladesh Army soldiers. A military officer, who was also present during the live-fire drill, sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka for urgent medical care.

The Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate has confirmed the incident and launched a formal investigation to determine the root cause of the blast. Investigators are working to establish whether the explosion was caused by ammunition instability, a mechanical failure within the aging armored platform, or other operational errors during the firing sequence.
