Air India has signed an agreement with SkyDrive and Suzuki Motor to explore using electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft for medical deliveries. The project aims to bypass road traffic for urgent supplies. Air India, the flag carrier owned by the Tata Group, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Japanese companies SkyDrive and Suzuki Motor Corporation to explore the use of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. This partnership is specifically focused on establishing a framework for transporting critical medical supplies, such as blood, vaccines, and organs, by air to bypass severe urban traffic congestion.

Strategic Focus on Medical Logistics

Unlike passenger-focused air taxi models, this collaboration prioritizes time-sensitive logistics. By using electric aircraft that can take off and land vertically without traditional runways, the companies aim to improve the speed of last-mile delivery for essential healthcare services. The joint study will leverage Air India’s existing cargo operational knowledge and airport infrastructure, alongside SkyDrive’s technical expertise in electric aircraft design and Suzuki’s manufacturing presence in India.

Competition in Advanced Air Mobility

This move brings Air India into direct competition with IndiGo, which has already pursued partnerships in this space. IndiGo has previously announced collaborations with Archer Aviation for urban air taxi services and Sarla Aviation to explore electric aircraft operations.
