India's First Hydrogen Train Set for Haryana Launch
Overview

India is preparing to launch its first hydrogen-powered train, a pilot project by Northern Railway set to operate between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana. A dedicated hydrogen plant in Jind is in final commissioning, ensuring fuel supply. This initiative aligns with Indian Railways' push for green technology demonstration.

Hydrogen Train Nears Debut

Haryana is set to launch India's first hydrogen-powered train. This pioneering project by Northern Railway will connect Jind and Sonipat. The initiative is currently in its final stages of preparation.

A dedicated hydrogen plant has been established in Jind to fuel the train. This plant ensures a stable and uninterrupted 11 kV power supply for both commissioning and operational phases. Its current storage capacity stands at 3,000 kilograms.

Green Technology Push

This development follows Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw's announcement in Parliament last month. He confirmed Indian Railways' undertaking of a state-of-the-art pilot project. The aim is to demonstrate the viability of hydrogen train technology.

Specifications for the planned operation have been framed by the Research, Design & Standards Organisation (RDSO). The hydrogen train-set's manufacturing is already complete. Hydrogen for the train is produced via electrolysis, a core component of green hydrogen generation.
