Air India Resumes Rome Route After Six Years
Tata Group-owned Air India is set to re-establish its flight connection to Rome, Italy, beginning March 25, 2026. This move signifies a significant expansion of the airline's European network, marking its return to the Italian capital after a hiatus dating back to early 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic had previously forced the suspension of these services.
The airline will operate the Delhi to Rome (Leonardo da Vinci International Airport - Fiumicino) route four times a week. Air India will deploy its Boeing 787-8 aircraft for these flights. These aircraft are configured with 18 business class seats, featuring flat beds for enhanced passenger comfort on long journeys, alongside 238 seats in the economy class.
Nipun Aggarwal, Chief Commercial Officer at Air India, emphasized the strategic importance of Rome. He noted the deep-rooted cultural and business commonalities between India and Italy, making Rome a natural fit for the airline's growing international presence. This expansion brings Air India's European destinations to eight, in addition to three points in the United Kingdom.

Ivan Bassato, Chief Aviation Officer, highlighted that the resumption of direct flights reinforces expectations for continued growth in long-haul markets during 2026. IndiGo Launches Direct Delhi-London Service
IndiGo, India's leading carrier, is also enhancing its international footprint by introducing direct flights between Delhi and London Heathrow. The airline plans to operate this new route five times a week, commencing February 2, 2026. The service will be conducted using Boeing 787 aircraft acquired through wet/damp leasing arrangements.
These flights will offer a dual-class configuration, including IndiGo's premium IndiGoStretch seats and standard economy class. Pieter Elbers, Chief Executive Officer of IndiGo, stated that this new service is designed to support the rising travel demand between the two major cities, catering to commerce, tourism, and visits to friends and family.
This route launch is a testament to IndiGo's commitment to making international travel more accessible and seamless. It aligns with the airline's broader strategy of strengthening connectivity to key global destinations. This follows recent route inaugurations to Denpasar (Bali), Krabi, Hanoi, Guangzhou, and Manchester, alongside an announced service to Athens starting January 2026.
