Highway Tolls Slashed During Expansion, Fees Standardized on Expressways
The Indian government is set to provide substantial relief to highway commuters through revised toll collection policies. The Finance Ministry has given its approval to key proposals put forth by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, aiming to ease the burden on users during road construction and standardize fee structures on major routes.
The Core Issue
Commuters using highways that are undergoing expansion from two-lane to four-lane will soon experience a significant reduction in toll charges. Currently, users often face inconvenience due to narrowed road widths and ongoing construction work, while still paying the standard toll rate. Recognizing this, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways proposed halving the toll during the construction phase to compensate for the diminished service quality.
Financial Implications
This policy change is expected to lead to a reduction in revenue for highway operators during the construction period. However, it aims to improve user satisfaction and potentially reduce overall travel times once projects are completed efficiently. Previously, tolls on expressways were often set at 1.25 times the rate of other National Highway stretches. This disparity will now be eliminated for partially opened projects.
