Container Manufacturing Ecosystem Boost
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's Budget 2026 speech detailed a ₹10,000 crore scheme over five years dedicated to establishing a world-class container manufacturing sector. This initiative aims to fortify domestic capabilities and enhance India's competitiveness in global trade.
Infrastructure Expansion Pledges
The budget outlines a sweeping vision for India's logistical backbone. A new Dedicated Freight Corridor will link Dankuni in the East to Surat in the West, promising faster cargo movement. Concurrently, 20 new National Waterways are slated for operationalization within the next five years, commencing with NW-5 in Odisha to connect key industrial and mineral hubs with major ports.
Promoting Waterways and Coastal Shipping
To encourage a modal shift toward sustainable transport, a Coastal Cargo Promotion Scheme is proposed. This aims to double the share of inland waterways and coastal shipping in overall cargo movement from the current 6% to 12% by 2047. A ship-repair ecosystem will also be established for inland waterways in Varanasi and Patna.
Skill Development and Niche Transport
The initiative extends to skill development, with plans for Regional Centres of Excellence to train manpower for the growing waterways sector, benefiting local youth. Furthermore, to boost last-mile connectivity and tourism, the government will incentivize the domestic manufacturing of seaplanes through a Seaplane VGF Scheme.
