BMW Completes Alpina Takeover
BMW has officially taken full control of Alpina, its revered German automotive tuner, effective January 1. The German automaker intends to transform the marque into a standalone luxury performance brand, a significant strategic move for both companies.
Decades of Tuner Collaboration
Alpina's storied partnership with BMW began in 1965, establishing a strong reputation for enhancing BMW vehicles. The tuner advanced to producing complete vehicles based on BMW platforms by 1978 and has been registered as an automobile manufacturer since 1983. Iconic models such as the B7 Turbo and the more recent B8 GT represent Alpina's legacy of craftsmanship.
Alpina's New Standalone Identity
While BMW announced its acquisition intentions in March 2022, extending previous agreements through 2025, the recent full takeover signifies a new chapter. The new brand will operate as BMW Alpina, featuring a logo inspired by the tuner's 1970s wordmark to highlight its independent character. Models are anticipated to be top-tier performers offering exclusive bespoke options.
Strategic Market Positioning
Industry analysts predict BMW Alpina will be positioned to compete directly in the ultra-luxury performance segment, drawing parallels to how Mercedes-Benz manages its Maybach brand. The first new ultra-exclusive vehicles are expected to be based on the 7-Series, with a potential follow-up based on the X7 SUV.
