Air India Welcomes First New Boeing 787 Dreamliner in 8 Years
Overview

Tata Group's Air India received its first line-fit Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, marking the airline's re-entry into operating this aircraft type after an eight-year hiatus. The delivery, completed on January 7, signals a significant fleet modernization effort following the airline's privatization. The new three-class configured aircraft is expected in India soon, enhancing Air India's wide-body capabilities and part of a larger order from Boeing.

Fleet Modernization Underway

Air India has taken delivery of its first line-fit Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, marking a significant milestone as the first Dreamliner to join the airline's fleet in over eight years. The title transfer for the aircraft was completed at Boeing's factory in Seattle on January 7.

Strategic Fleet Expansion

This delivery is particularly notable as it is the first Dreamliner Air India has received since its privatization in January 2022. The last line-fit Dreamliner was acquired by the airline in October 2017, during its previous government ownership. The new aircraft, configured with economy, premium economy, and business class seating, is expected to arrive in India within days after DGCA inspections.

Enhancing Passenger Experience

The new Boeing 787-9 is the airline's first wide-body aircraft delivered from its 2023 order, which includes 220 Boeing jets. Air India Group, now under Tata ownership, is aggressively expanding and modernizing its fleet. Following the merger with Vistara, Air India already operates 26 B787-8s and 6 B787-9s. The airline group currently manages over 300 aircraft, with 185 under the Air India brand and the remainder with Air India Express, which has also begun inducting new Boeing 737-8s.
